Tuscany's Cosmopolitan Port
Yoga in Livorno
A vibrant multicultural port city with Venetian-style canals, dramatic seafront terraces, and authentic maritime cuisine.
Livorno is Tuscany's largest port and most cosmopolitan city, built by the Medici in the Renaissance as an "ideal city" with fortified walls and Venetian-style canals. Its history as a free port made it a haven for diverse communities — Jewish, Armenian, Greek, and more.
The iconic Terrazza Mascagni is one of Italy's most photogenic seafronts: a vast checkerboard of 34,000 black and white tiles overlooking the Ligurian Sea, named for Livorno-born opera composer Pietro Mascagni. It's spectacular at sunset and buzzes with locals on evening strolls.
Explore the Venezia Nuova district by boat, winding through 17th-century canals. Visit the Fortezza Nuova, now a peaceful park, or discover the Macchiaioli art movement at the Giovanni Fattori Museum.
Livorno's authentic, unpretentious character makes it refreshingly different from tourist-heavy Tuscan towns. Yoga here connects you to a working city with genuine maritime soul — and some of Tuscany's best seafood.
Food & Wine
Cacciucco is Livorno's signature dish — a rich fish stew with at least five types of seafood, served over garlic toast. Also try triglie alla livornese (red mullet with tomato). Local wines and craft beers complement the maritime flavours.
