Land of White Gold
Yoga in Massa & Carrara
Gateway to the legendary Carrara marble quarries, where mountains gleam white against the Tuscan sky.
The Carrara marble quarries have supplied the world's greatest sculptors for over 2,000 years. Romans extracted stone here to transform their city from brick to marble; Michelangelo personally selected blocks for his David and Pietà.
Today, the quarries remain active, and their lunar landscape is one of Tuscany's most dramatic sights. Jeep tours wind up to 1,000 metres, passing through tunnels carved into the mountainside and offering breathtaking views of the coast below. The Fantiscritti and Colonnata quarry museums tell the story of generations of cavatori (quarrymen).
The town of Massa, nestled between the Apuan Alps and the sea, makes an excellent base for exploring both mountains and coast. The region also borders Cinque Terre, making it easy to combine your Tuscan yoga retreat with a day trip to those famous colourful villages.
Yoga among the marble mountains offers a profound connection to earth and stone. Practice with views of peaks that have inspired artists for millennia.
Food & Wine
The famous Lardo di Colonnata is aged in marble basins with herbs — a delicacy tied to the quarrying tradition. Pair with Colli di Luni wines, produced in the hills between Tuscany and Liguria.
